Apostille is the process of legitimizing a document that is sent to a foreign government or agency. The notary’s signature and commission are verified by the Secretary of State as being legitimate before stamping the document with an Apostille stamp.

If the document that a person sends to a foreign country is part of the 1961 Hague convention treaty, an Apostille is obtained from the Department of State. On the other hand, if a person sends a document to a country that is not part of the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty, an Apostille Certificate is obtained. A1 has a list of countries that are part of the Hague Convention Treaty.
